Description
In rural Sri Lanka, thousands of families still struggle daily without access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation. Many communities rely on contaminated wells or unprotected water sources, leading to widespread health problems, especially among children and women.
Why This Project is Important:
- Poor water quality and inadequate sanitation contribute to high rates of waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea, typhoid, and chronic kidney issues. Children suffer from malnutrition and frequent illness, affecting their growth and school attendance.
- Women and girls often spend hours fetching water, exposing them to safety risks and limiting their time for education or income-generating activities.
- Clean water and sanitation are foundational for fostering employment in rural areas. Healthy communities are more productive. Reduced illness means fewer lost workdays for farmers and small business owners. Better hygiene also supports tourism, agriculture value chains, and small enterprises.
- Improved WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) creates safer environments, boosts school performance, and empowers communities to break the cycle of poverty.
