Large stretches of the Batticaloa Kalmunai Highway, and low lying areas in Batticaloa have been inundated in the recent heavy rains.
Families in Kallady, Navatkudha, Nochchimunai and Manchanthoduwai have left their flooded houses. The Batticaloa MC has been taking steps to drain the flooded areas. Batticaloa Mayor Thiagaraja Saravanapavan, Deputy Mayor Kanthasamy Sathiyaseelan and Commissioner Manickavasagar Thayaparan visited the affected areas and instructed officials to provide relief. The Batticaloa Meteorology Department reported that Vakarai received 214.7 mm of rain, Batticaloa 150.7 mm, Mylambaveli 155.2 mm, Pasikkudha – 145.2 mm, Rugam 120.3 mm, Unnichchai 61.0 mm, Thumbankerny 38.2 mm and Kaddumurivu 8.0 mm yesterday (22).
